Homemade cinnamon rolls with a cream cheese frosting, perfect for breakfast or dessert.

  • 750ml flour
  • 5ml salt
  • 10ml yeast
  • 60ml sugar
  • 180ml milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 60g melted butter

Filling

  • 60g melted butter
  • 120ml brown sugar
  • 10ml cinnamon

Method:

  • Combine flour, salt, and yeast – mix well.
  • In a small saucepan, heat milk to lukewarm (NOT HOT) and add the melted butter, sugar, egg, and yolk, beat well.
  • Add liquids to dry ingredients, mix to combine, and knead for about 10 minutes until a soft pliable dough is formed.
  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and proof in a warm spot until doubled in size.
  • Knock down and roll out to about 40cm x 22cm.

Filling:

  • Brush dough rectangle with melted butter, sprinkle over the cinnamon sugar, and roll up tightly. Fold in the seam and make sure it will not open up.
  • Cut into 2 cm rounds, place on a greased, lined baking tray, slightly apart, cover, and proof for about 15 minutes or until almost doubled in size.
  • Bake in a preheated oven (180°C) for about 25 minutes.
  • Drizzle with cream cheese frosting.

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • Beat together 120g cream cheese, 45g soft butter, and 200ml icing sugar plus ½ teaspoon vanilla extract.
